Franja Partisan Hospital – CLOSED due to storm damage
Looking for Franja
There is a secret hospital from the Second World War in the Pasica gorge in Dolenji Novaki near Cerkno. The path to the settlement with 14 wooden huts runs through a little forest with a variety of plants (the first spring primroses, the fragrant cyclamens in autumn), along the track along the picturesque creek and across the bridges over the creek’s current. The sound of running water silences a human step, talk is lost in the echo of the rocky banks.
How much courage and humanity it took to work in conditions like this! This is something Doctor Franja — who the hospital is named after — probably didn’t think about. She was saving lives with immense heart together with her co-workers. Over 500 wounded were treated here – not only Slovenes, but also the French, the Americans, the Croats, the Russians… That is why Franja Partisan Hospital is a memorial and a bearer of the culture of peace. In our wish to pass a message of comradeship, solidarity and tolerance to future generations, Franja Partisan Hospital was fully restored after a natural disaster in 2007 and reopened for visitors in 2010.

Who is afraid of the Thread Man, named “Ta terjast”?
You can learn more about traditional carnival masks – the Runners (laufarji) in Cerkno Museum all year round, not only at carnival time. Wooden head masks – “the larfas” that only members of the runners’ (laufarji) family wear, are scary, kind, beautiful, ugly and original. The members of the runners’ (laufarji) family prepare their entire outfit themselves, every year sewing it all over again – outfits for the Carnival with the moss, for the Pine Man with the pine branches and for the Ivy Man with the ivy leaves. What character do you like most? Maybe the Thread Man, or Mister, or Madam, Daisy or the Wild Man?

Idrija “Kamšt”
And yet it still moves
Did you know that the preserved wooden drive wheel of the mine’s water pump – the Idrija “Kamšt” with a diameter of 13.6m is the largest such wheel in Europe? And that it is one of the monuments of the mercury heritage that belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage List? We advise you to call the Museum telephone number on the information board on the door of the stone building, and wait for a guide, or arrange a tour in advance. The operation of the 1790 water pump – the “Kamšt” will no longer be unknown to you! The wait will not be too long for children, since on a green plot, called In Mejca, is in the largest and most popular children’s playground. At the same time, you can test why the hanging bridge over the Idrijca river is called a “whee” bridge.

Wild Lake (Divje jezero) and Lajšt natural riverside beach in Idrijska Bela
Sometimes wild, sometimes peaceful
Before going home, we recommend a visit to the Wild Lake – the first Slovenian museum in nature. It is wild is mostly when it rains heavily, when the water is blasting out of the karst spring, which is nicely seen on the lake surface. The special conditions in its surroundings make it possible for even alpine plants to grow, including the Primula carniolica from the primrose family, which was supposedly first found here in the 18th century by the famous Idrijan physician Joannes Antonius Scopoli. In the pit part that the divers have explored to a depth of 160m, even the olm is supposed to live!

It’s just a little more than 5km from the Wild Lake (Divje jezero) to the Lajšt natural riverside beach in Idrijska Bela. Cooling off in the shade of the trees or jumping into the cold river feels good in the hot summer days. A true refreshment and a final touch to make your Sunday trip a blast!
