Gewerkenegg Castle
Somewhat special among castles, full of secrets
Gewerkenegg Castle in Idrija was built in the 16th century for the needs of defence, mining administration and storage of mercury. Today it houses the Idrija Municipal Museum. The museum tells the 500-year-old story about the history of the mercury mine and the town of Idrija, giving an insight into the hard everyday life of the miners, embellished by social and cultural life and the snow-white lace their wives and daughters were making in the shelter of their home for extra income. Would you try to make lace?

The house with the roof to the sky
A true Idrijan miner’s house: narrow, tall, painted in white and embedded into a hillside allows us to look into the miners’ humble everyday life, which was enriched by companionship, socialising and a sense of humour. The tour of the furnished miner family’s apartment from the beginning of the 20th century and the black & white photographs of Idrija take you to back to the past and show you their habits, indulgences and secrets. Would you like to play a volkalca game with us or smell the wormwood the miners used to make the sour drink of “geruš” from?
After the visit
You can use the time to rest and enjoy a good lunch. You cannot leave Idrija without trying a legendary local speciality – the Idrija žlikrofi (similar to ravioli), which are known far and wide, and offered on the menus of all the inns in Idrija. Bon appétit!
A little over a kilometre from Idrija toward Ljubljana, there is the mysterious Wild Lake (Divje jezero). There’s a carpark there and information boards directing visitors to the viewpoint.

The Wild Lake (Divje jezero)
Sometimes wild, sometimes peaceful
After visiting cultural attractions, we recommend a visit to the Wild Lake – the first Slovenian museum in nature. It is wild is mostly when it rains heavily, when the water is blasting out of the karst spring, which is nicely seen on the lake surface. The special conditions in its surroundings make it possible for alpine plants to grow, including the Primula carniolica from the primrose family, which was supposedly first found here in the 18th century by the famous Idrijan physician Joannes Antonius Scopoli. In the cave part that the divers have explored to a depth of 160m, even the olm is supposed to live! The magical secret of the lake will follow you on the way home…
