The foundation of the Idrija Municipal Museum art collection were the artworks created in artists’ colonies, organised in Idrija and its surroundings at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. Thanks to donations and purchases, the museum later acquired the artworks of the following Idrija artists: Nikolaj Pirnat, Albin Vončina, Julče Božič, Ivan Seljak Čopič, Fanči Gostiša, Rafael Terpin, Rudi Skočir, Nande Rupnik, Jurij Pfeifer, Staš Kleindienst; as well as many other Slovenian artists such as Avgust Černigoj, France Slana, Ive Šubic, Miha Maleš, Janez Bernik, Vladimir Makuc, Klavdij Tutta. Since the establishment of an international get-together of artists on Sinji vrh hill above Ajdovščina in 1993, the Idrija Municipal Museum has obtained one or two artworks every year for its collection from this internationally relevant event.
Idrija Municipal Museum keeps 1,732 artworks and sculptures of Slovenian and foreign artists.
